When we speak of Murals the term »street art« and »graffiti« may also come into mind – maybe not only in reference to a positive impression. As »painting« got easier and easier over the years, with the use of spray-cans, also the intention of the artworks changed – the message of the painting got displaced by a mere decorative purpose.
A Mural on the contrary, has a different approach – it strives to contain a certain meaning, to derive from a question and transport a certain answer. It is certainly not possible to answer an question that everyone understands in the same way, though. This subjective interpretation can’t be avoided (with any work of art) but especially when the piece is exposed to such an large audience. But finding an absolute answer is not the point here. Moreover, the movement of muraling is eager to create awareness and evoke reflection. To tease out a whole bunch of answers and to thereby create a silent dialogue between the artist, the viewer as well as it’s surroundings.
The future depends on artists themselves, when they see that the role they play in the public space is to synthesise the truth with the spaces we share.
